Chiaki Nishikawa is a young but ambitious government employee in the recession-hit city of Oita in southwestern Japan. In an effort to boost PR for Oita and revitalize the local economy, the mayor recruits Chiaki to lead an unlikely initiative: reviving the sport of competitive tug-of-war, in which Oita's teams had once been world champions and local heroes. Public interest is scarce, but Chiaki manages to enlist a group of women from a struggling local catering company, promising that if they participate, the mayor will save their factory. Thus an all-female tug-of-war team is born, but they must contend with rivals, win over the public, and manage their own clashing personalities in order to prevail. Filmed on-location in Oita with the cooperation of the local government and inspired by recent true events, this heart-warming comedy was directed by Nobuo Mizuta and stars Mao Inoue. Screenwriter Daisuke Habara achieved previous success with his film Hula Girls, which was shown at the JICC last year. Register Now! This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Please note that seating is limited and registration does not guarantee guests a seat. Registered guests will be seated on a first come, first served basis. Please contact us at jicc@ws.mofa.go.jp in the event of cancellation. Doors open at 6:00pm.
