  • Hailing from the Ivory Coast, Dobet Gnahoré left her home country to escape civil war in 1999. After forming a band of eclectic musicians in France with her guitarist husband Colin Laroche de Feline, she released her debut album Ano Neko (2004) to much acclaim.
  • On the strength of the immensely catchy and powerful songs on Ano Neko, Gnahoré was nominated for a 2006 BBC World Music Award.
  • Gnahoré sings in 7 African languages, as well as French. Her lyrics often touch on social issues like the AIDS pandemic and women’s rights in Africa, as well as personal meditations on family, children, and her past. Her fourth album, Na Dré (2014), was released last March.
  • In 2010 Gnahoré won a Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance with American singer/songwriter India.Arie for their song “Pearls.” The song appears on India.Arie’s album Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics (2009).
