OAPIA Welcomes AAPI Bowser Administration Appointees

The DC Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (OAPIA) welcomed Mayor Muriel Bowser’s recent appointments of Hanseul Kang as the State Superintendent of Education and Allison Ladd as the Chief of Staff of the DC Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD).

“We are excited to welcome a great education advocate in Hanseul Kang and housing advocate in Allison Ladd,” said David Do, OAPIA Director. “These appointments reflect Mayor Bowser’s fresh start commitment to ensuring that District government is reflective of the city’s growing diversity, and responsive to the needs of its residents, including the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.”

OAPIA is committed to helping create a more welcoming and open environment for AAPI students and residents in the District of Columbia. Last year, OAPIA launched the AAPI School Choice | PreK Initiative to promote and encourage participation by AAPI parents in school choice options in District and Pre-K programs. Additionally, OAPIA hosted a housing workshop for limited English proficient (LEP)/non-English proficient (NEP) AAPI residents on housing related issues, and promoted tenants’ rights through the AAPI Tenants’ Rights Awareness Campaign.

OAPIA looks forward to working with Kang and the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) and to continue efforts with DC Public Schools (DCPS) to ensure that AAPI students, including English language learners (ELL), receive access to a good quality education. OAPIA also looks forward to working with Ladd and DHCD and to continue efforts with the DC Housing Authority (DHCA) and the Office of the Tenant Advocate (OTA) to address affordable housing and economic development issues affecting the AAPI community.
