Latin American Film Festival at AFI Silver Theatre

From September 17 through October 7, AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center will be hosting our annual AFI Latin American Film Festival (LAFF). The Festival will showcase a unique lineup of Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese films, many of which will not be screened anywhere else in the area.  A number of the films are special presentations, and will have discussions with the filmmakers and guests following the showing, in addition to Embassy-hosted receptions.

Highlights of the festival include Opening Night film SAND DOLLARS, romantic drama SAND DOLLARS, based on the novel “Les Dollars des Sables” by Jean-Noël Pancrazi and starring Geraldine Chaplin.  The film was recently announced as the Dominican Republic’s Official Academy Award® Submission.  Other highlights include MESSI, a docudrama about the world’s greatest soccer player; Spanish thriller MARSHLAND, winner of 10 Goya Awards; the U.S. premiere of Colombia’s ALIAS MARIA, straight from its debut at the Cannes Film Festival; Peru’s gripping film noir THE VANISHED ELEPHANT; WITHOUT WINGS, the first U.S. feature to be made in Cuba since 1959; Mexico’s Almodovar-esque comedy ELVIRA, I’D GIVE YOU MY LIFE BUT I’M USING IT; the U.S. premiere of THE GREATEST HOUSE IN THE WORLD, a beautifully made fable from Guatemala; THE EMPTY CLASSROOM, an omnibus film about education in Latin America, made under the direction of Gael Garcia Bernal; a Brooklyn-set dark comedy from Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Silva, NASTY BABY; Argentine soccer dramedy EL CINCO; and Costa Rican romantic comedy VIAJE.

Tickets are $13 general admission, and $10 for AFI members. We also offer the Pase Especial, valued at over $500, an all-access pass to the festival, the receptions, and happy hours. More information can be found at
