Lunar New Year Marked by Hai Hua Community Center at Fair Oaks Mall

The Chinese New Year is being marked around the world, and here in Northern Virginia, Fair Oaks Mall in conjunction with the Hai Hua Community Center of Falls Church, held its annual 2-day celebration last weekend.  

The Chinese New Year is characterized by one of 12 animals appearing in the Chinese zodiac which is divided into 12 blocks. This year celebrates the Year of the Monkey, the ninth animal in the cycle.

“I like to think that on the Lunar New Year just like on St Patrick’s day when everyone is Irish, everyone is Asian in Fairfax County,”  Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova told the audience during opening ceremonies. “We celebrate our diversity in Fairfax County. We consider it to be our greatest asset.”

Congressman Gerry Connolly also welcome the crowd.

The event is one of the largest Lunar New Year celebrations in the Metropolitan DC area. It features a traditional Chinese dragon dance, several dance performances and martial arts demonstrations along with children’s crafts and a special lantern festival. Over 200 performers participated. They represented several countries within Asia including China, Korea, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Mongolia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Polynesia along with the state of Hawaii.
