Photo Montage: City of Rockville Celebrates Lunar New Year

The City of Rockville and the City of Rockville’s Asian Pacific American Task Force presented its annual Lunar New Year’s celebration yesterday at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre located downtown. Several dance and musical performance marked the Year of the Monkey.

Those participating were: Samuel Hume; 2015 Pacific Miss Asian American Kira Oman; Northeast Association; Lihui Zhang’s Vocal Music Studio; Fairfax Chinese Dance Troupe; Summer Time Club; Nita and Group; Flowing Lilies; Korean Drum, Doll and Dance from Spark M. Matsunaga Elementary School; Diana Dance Arts; Northwest Art Ensemble; Blaze Dance Team and the Washington Chu Shan Chinese Opera Institute.  

The Chinese New Year is characterized by one of 12 animals appearing in the Chinese zodiac which is divided into 12 blocks. The Monkey is the ninth animal in the cycle.

“This event doesn’t just celebrate the cultural arts of Asia,” stated city Councilmember Julie Palakovich Carr in welcoming the audience. “It’s a chance to celebrate the diversity of Rockville. One in six Rockville residents were born in Asia. That’s one of the reasons Rockville is a special place to live.”
