Maya Angelou’s Children’s Poetry Comes to Life

Dance Place hosts a contemporary double-bill from Light Switch Dance Theater and special guests Next Reflex Dance Collective.

Light Switch Dance Theatre‘s Nest uses contemporary dance, visual art, music and film to investigate the concepts of home for those without one.

Special guests Next Reflex Dance Collective perform Jump In inspired by Maya Angelou’s book of children’s poetry Life Doesn’t Frighten Me, with original music by Nate Masters.

About the Program

Nest uses contemporary dance, visual art, music, and film to investigate the concepts of a nest (home) for those without one. Nest explores the challenges, achievements and aspirations of current and former members of the homeless community. Those without a “nest” we ask: How was it lost? Was it ever there? How hard has is it to obtain a “nest” when you don’t currently have one? What are essentials in our nest for survival in the greater community? Nest asks those who have; What are you willing to do in your community to help those who don’t have a nest? In exploring these questions the exhibition/performance illustrates that every human deserves and needs a home.

Jump In is a culturally rich and diverse dance work that nurtures a broad audience with original music composed by Nate Masters. High impact dancing toys with grey areas of experience that keep us from confronting our fears head on.
