Daniel Burkholder & Danceworks Performance Company

DC’s Dance Place will present a multimedia performance work, Stories from A Life, by Daniel Burkholder & Danceworks Performance Company on March 25-26, 2017.

Told through the life story of the artist’s grandmother, 96-year-old Sophia Saren, Daniel Burkholder’s new multimedia work weaves interview video clips with athletic dancing, audience interaction and music both abstract and familiar. In collaboration with Danceworks Performance CompanyStories from a Life questions memory and the stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves. The audience is divided into two locations – one with visceral dance performed live and another where a video interview with Ms. Saren plays alongside subtle, gestural movement. At intermission, the audience switches spaces and the work repeats. By layering information, Burkholder questions how audiences see, understand and allow work to have meaning.
