Yesterday afternoon, Ralph Northam, a pediatric neurologist who grew up on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, was sworn in as the 73rd governor of the Commonwealth.

β€œThe guiding principle of this administration will be simple, we will work together to make our Commonwealth work better for all Virginians, no matter who they are or where they are from,” Northam told the crowd during his inaugural speech.

Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax was also sworn in. Historically, Fairfax is the second African-American to be elected to a statewide office in Virginia. Former Governor Doug Wilder was the first.

Attorney General Mark Herring, who won re-election in November, was also sworn into office.

Several marching bands, cultural groups and agencies participated in a parade after the swearing in ceremonies. This included the entire Virginia Military Institute of which Northam is an alumni of.
