“Bilal, A New Breed of Hero,” Animated Action Film Tells Story of the Power of One

The Silver Spring-based Meditation Museum, an organization committed to nurturing the inner being and promoting peace through understanding of the self in a stressful world, sponsored the screening of the powerful animated film “Bilal, A New Breed of Hero.” The story is as relevant today as it was 1000 years ago. Based on the life of a real heroic figure in history, Bilal Ibn Rabbah, the film delivers a message of equality and empowerment of the self.

“Being a great man begins with taking off your chains… the ones you cannot see,” are the words of the young Bilal’s mother. These words remain with him as he and his sister are taken from their home in Ethiopia and enslaved by an evil merchant Ummaya, who is a master at instilling fear in them.

Bilal is transformed from a frightened and subservient slave to a strong fighter for justice as he realizes that only he can enslave himself. He breaks the chains of anger and vengeance against his master that consumed him. With the help of Abu Bakr, a kind and generous merchant, Bilal becomes aware that “great men are those who have the will to choose their own destiny.” He finds that true strength is in the mind, not in the weapon.

He is able to lead those enslaved by an evil system into freedom, finding the ultimate peace in knowing who he is, “We are born equals, we bleed the same color and we breathe the same air.”

The 3D computer-animated action-adventure film was produced by Barajoun Entertainment and co-directed by Khurram H. Alavi and Ayman Jamal. With a story by Jamal, the screenplay is written by Alavi, Alex Kronemer, Michael Wolfe and Yassin Kamel.

The film opens on February 3, 2018 in a theatre near you. Movie goers are encouraged to organize watch parties to enjoy with others the beautiful message of “The Power of One.”
