This year’s performance, entitled Sounougal: Our Boat, takes audience members on a majestic journey that explores how freedom was fought for and won in Senegal—a nation of millions with one heart and one soul. About KanKouran West African Dance Company
KanKouran West African Dance Company was formed in 1983, in Washington, DC, by Artistic Director Assane Konte and former Director of Music, Abdou Kounta, who grew up together in Dakar, Senegal. KanKouran was founded to contribute to the extension of the arts by introducing the essence of traditional African dancing and drumming to audiences; enriching American cultural heritage through the integration of authentic West African performing arts; and promoting intercultural understanding through education and the performing arts.
