Dance Place welcomes three companies straight from Cuba to our DC stage, featuring contemporary dance from Malpaso Dance Company, ballroom dance from Rueda All-Stars and contemporary jazz music from Yissy Garcia.
Malpaso Dance Company (from Cuba)

Audiences responded ecstatically to this young Cuban company when it made its U.S. debut at The Joyce last spring, and The New York Times declared that it was “impossible to choose favorites among the dancers.” Embodying the passion that defines Cuban life and its rich dance tradition, the program includes the DC premiere of a work by Artistic Director Osnel Delgado set to a new composition by the sensational Arturo O’Farrill. Rueda All Stars (from Cuba)

Since 2004, Rueda All Stars has developed an extensive repertoire of Cuban ballroom dances under the direction of Jorge Luna Roque, including Rueda de Casino, Mambo, Rumba and more. See the All Stars in action, then try your own moves on the dance floor with the performers and members of the DC Casineros. Funded in part by NALAC.
Yissy Garcia (from Cuba)
Saturday, March 7 at 8pm
Hailed as one of the elite drummers of Cuba, Yissy Garcia offers a fresh interpretation of young trends in jazz from the Island by combining her compositions with electronic beats. The musical outcome ranges from compositions of great aesthetic simplicity to complex harmonies and rhythms, all the while expressing a deep Cuban identity. Made possible through The National Performance Network’s Performing Americas Program.
