How Did the Dance Scene Develop in DC?

An Evening in Memory of Jan Van Dyke (1941-2015)

Dance Place celebrates the life of Jan Van Dyke and her contributions to building the dance scene in Washington DC on January 30 and 31, 2017 at the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Theater. In DANCE PLACE/REUNION, co-directors Carla Perlo and Deborah Riley have gathered a group of important artists vital to the growth of modern dance in Washington, DC and across the nation.

The following artists have been invited to share works at the Dance Place stage with Perlo and Riley for this memorable weekend: Steve Bloom, Helen Hayes, Alvin Mayes, Lesa McLaughlin, Cathy Paine and Harriet Moncure Fellows. Jan Van Dyke’s choreography will be danced by her company, Dance Project, Inc., now based in Greensboro, North Carolina.

About Jan Van Dyke

Jan Van Dyke made modern dance her profession for 52 years, as a performer, teacher, choreographer and artistic director. She came to Greensboro in 1986 as a doctoral student at UNC-Greensboro. She taught dance there for 23 years – five as the head of the department – influencing generations of up-and-coming dancers. She founded and led the nonprofit Dance Project, which runs the N.C. Dance Festival, the Van Dyke Dance Group and the Dance Project at City Arts based in the downtown Greensboro Cultural Center.

Her accomplishments earned her several honors, including a Fulbright fellowship in Portugal, the Dance Teacher Award for Higher Education from Dance Teacher magazine and the Betty Cone Medal of Arts from ArtsGreensboro.

As of July 1, 2015, Lauren Trollinger Joyner and Anne Morris assumed Co-Directorship of Jan Van Dyke’s company, Dance Project. Board President Meagan Jolliffe said, “Dance Project was born from [Jan’s] incredible creative insight with a primary mission to cultivate modern dance state-wide. Both Anne and Lauren believe in this mission and are dedicated to carry it forward together.”

The Van Dyke Dance Group will remain in operation as a repertory company, under the umbrella of Dance Project; ultimately, long-time company dancers will facilitate the maintenance, licensing, and archiving of the repertory.
