San Francisco-based dance company LEVYdance begins their 2015 season with the East Coast premiere of Soar, an immersive performance that places audiences and dancers together on stage in a “choose your own adventure” experience. Individuals discover personal narratives as the space continues to transform, revealing new landscapes and scenarios. Soar marks the first LEVYdance work choreographed and directed by longtime company artist and collaborator, Scott Marlowe. Renowned composer Ben Juodvalkis created the soundscape for the performance concurrently with the dance, as sound, movement and story informed each other simultaneously. Join us for this performance on Saturday, January 10 at 8pm and Sunday, January 11 at 4pm at Dance Place.
About LEVYdance
Artistic Director Benjamin Levy founded LEVYdance in 2002. In 2004, Levy was named one of the “Top 25 Choreographers to Watch” by Dance Magazine and awarded a San Francisco Bay Guardian Goldie Award for “Outstanding Artistic Achievement.” He is known for his cutting-edge, interdisciplinary, interactive works that explore the nuances of the human experience. Levy’s signature aesthetic is a vibrant landscape of physical action and reaction — under his direction, dance artists express personal narratives in physical currents, engaging and responding in cinematic scenarios of human intimacy. As the Artistic Director of LEVYdance, Levy has presented original works at prestigious venues across the nation and internationally.
Beyond performing in traditional venues, LEVYdance creates innovative installation works that seek to redefine the relationship between performer and audience. LEVYdance regularly conducts master classes and holds residencies at universities on the West and East coasts. In addition, the company hosts an annual summer intensive for college and pre-professional dancers in San Francisco at LEVYstudio. LEVYdance has been awarded funding from San Francisco’s Grants for the Arts and Voluntary Arts Contribution Fund, the San Francisco Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Dance: Creation to Performance program funded by the James Irvine Foundation and administered by Dance/USA, the Creative Work Fund and the Joyce Theater’s Stephen and Cathy Weinroth Fund for New York.
