Children Unmask the Cultural Richness of Indonesia at the KID Museum

The KID Museum of Bethesda (Md) is a place where children can learn and have fun at the same time with many interactive experiences. The museum’s mission is simple: “To cultivate creativity, curiosity and compassion to build a better world.”

Saturday at the museum offered a day long learning experience with “Discover Indonesia Day”. Children were able to learn about the rich culture of Indonesia, a country made up of many islands with each island having its own distinct culture. They learned about the many faces of Indonesia through masks, batik, music and food.

Activities include: Mask making using a batik print from a distinct Indonesian region–Sumatra, Borneo, Java, or Sulawesi. The mask-making workshop was in partnership with Rumah Indonesia; music-making with Houseofangklung-Washington D.C.. Children were able to try out an Angklung, a traditional bamboo instrument from West Java; enjoy a traditional mask dance, performed by Indonesian Kids Performing Arts and savor the taste of Indonesia through its food.

Discover Indonesia was hosted by the Embassy of Indonesia in collaboration with Rumah Indonesia and IKPA USA (Indonesian Kids Performing Arts)
